With the world as it is right now, a little bit of remote relaxation sounds like the top of our 2022 bucket list. What better place to do it than the world’s biggest pool that we’re lucky enough to enjoy right here in our own state of Colorado? Glenwood Hot Springs is a beautiful, secluded resort that’s a short drive away from some of the best skiing in Colorado, like Snowmass and Aspen, and is the shortest drive from Sunlight Mountain Resort.
The inception of the springs came when early settlers and entrepreneurs Isaac Cooper and Walter Devereux saw the potential of building a resort, but it didn’t come easy. The building of the springs was a bit seedy, with inmates who were put to work breaking out into fights amidst the diversion of an entire river, a huge feat in itself. In 1888, the resort opened with the springs and a men’s bathhouse with a men’s only gambling casino. Since its opening, it’s gone through many changes until landing on what it is today: a family friendly resort.
The springs are perfect year-round, sitting at a comfortable 92 degrees during all seasons, and is open daily from 9am to 9pm. Pool reservation isn’t required, but is on a first-come, first-serve basis, with lodge guests getting guaranteed access to the pool. The water itself comes from the Yampah Springs, which translates to ‘Big Medicine,’ and contains minerals like zinc which reduces the risk of age-related diseases and sulfate which relieves pain, detoxifies on a cellular level, and maintains healthy skin, hair, and nails among 13 other minerals.
Soak in the winter and in the summer, enjoy the new Sopris Splash Zone that’s for fans of water sports or lazy rivers on tubes. Day passes vary by season and during April they’re less than $40.
