Facts, Curiosities and Interesting Things about Trinity United Methodist Church
1. Once the tallest tower
Nowadays, the height of Trinity United Methodist Church’s high tower isn’t so impressive when compared to the city’s other towering buildings and skyscrapers. However, when it was first constructed in the mid 1800s, the 183 ft structure looked out over the city, and was actually one of the tallest stone towers in the country at that time.
2. A priceless organ takes center stage
In the late 1800s, Isaac Blake was appointed as the church’s official music director. Blake donated $30,000 of his own money to fund the construction of a grand organ that would take center stage inside the historic church. Designed by the Roosevelt Organ Works of New York, the organ took 18 months to finish and is now worth an estimated $2,500,000.
3. Innovative techniques helped bring in all the beauty
Designed by Healy and Millet of Chicago, the church’s stunning stained glass windows are one of the building’s most striking features. Although painting glass windows was common practice in the 19th century, this church’s windows were made using colored and textured opalescent glass. The use of this method to add color to the windows was totally new at the time, and Healy and Millet were hailed for leading this innovation in the world of design.
