Facts, Curiosities and Interesting Things about Wings Over the Rockies
1. Two locations, one purpose
The organization extends across two separate locations. The air and space museum at the former Lowry Air Force Base offers world-class historical exhibits and interactive experiences. Exploration of Flight opened in 2018 and offers flight and simulator experiences and showcases various aircraft. Both locations aim to “educate, inspire, and excite all people about aviation and space endeavors of the past, present and future.”
2. How it all started
After the Lowry Air Force Base closed in 1994, a group of volunteers borrowed aircraft from the US Air Force Museum to form the Wings Over the Rockies museum. Since then, the museum has gone from strength to strength, and on the way to becoming one of the best aviation and space museums in the world.
3. The Young Eagles Program
While there are plenty of programs and experiences to discover at the museum and Exploration of Flight, the Young Eagles Program is certainly one worth mentioning. Developed by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), the program is designed to introduce children, ages 8 to 17, to the world of flight. From volunteer opportunities and free rides to rallies, the program encourages the youth of today to pursue careers in aviation.
